European Region of Gastronomy

Since 2014 I have been the Director of East Lombardy Scientific Committee – European Region of Gastronomy 2017 project.

The overall aim of the European Region of Gastronomy Platform and Award is to improve the quality of life in certain European regions. This is achieved by placing focus on their unique gastronomic assets, promoting health education, stimulating culinary innovation and endorsing sustainability.

The European Region of Gastronomy project aims to use the gastronomic assets of European regions to:

  • Enable Europe to feed itself in a more sustainable fashion
  • Care for the environment and preserve local cultures
  • Contribute to social cohesion
  • Support the development of local economies

In the same way that the European Capital of Culture award has brought attention to the cultural assets of many cities, the European Region of Gastronomy aims to highlight the gastronomic dynamism of many European regions

East Lombardy has been awarded the European Region of Gastronomy award for the year 2017, along with the regions of Aarhus-Central in Denmark and Riga-Gauja in Latvia.
IGCAT (The International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism) organizes the award with the support of other European institutions.

Recent research has placed particular emphasis on the growing links between food, culture, creativity and tourism (OECD 2009, OECD 2012, UNWTO 2012, OECD 2014). The European Region of Gastronomy project aims to further unite these four industries in order to provide a solution for sustainable European development.

In order to achieve this overall purpose, the project is comprised of both a platform and an award. The platform is made up of a number of European regions, 2-3 of which receive the European Region of Gastronomy award every year.
