Italy has a rich and diversified heritage, potentially capable of meeting the needs of tourists. Its tourism offer provides a positive image of our country, as it is strongly linked to local traditions and territory.

In the tourism imaginary, Italy is often associated with a high quality of life, which is related to both places and culture, as well as food. Health, variety, strong territorial roots and tradition are the elements that characterize our food and wine heritage, which is increasingly attracting the attention of tourists, both Italian and foreign. Gastronomy has become an important component in the travel choices of Italian tourists. The discovery of food and wine products is also accompanied by other activities, such as visits to museums, monuments and other cultural attractions, in order to discover the destination and what it has to offer.

With this in mind, my goal is to spread knowledge among operators in the sector and provide them with tools in order to improve the Italian food and wine offer, through training and consultancy activities.

Report on Gastronomy Tourism in Italy

Since 2018, every year we conduct a research on the state of the food tourism industry in Italy. The outcomes are published in the Report on Gastronomy Tourism in Italy, which is an extended and comprehensive study of about 500 pages. Starting from an analysis on Italian travellers, it delineates the features of supply and demand, exploring the best international practices and illustrating valuable opinions of tourism experts.

The Scientific Committee of the Report on Gastronomy Tourism in Italy features Roberta Garibaldi, Author, Matthew J. Stone, California State University, Chico (USA), Carlos Fernandez, Istituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo (Portugal), Greg Richards, NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences, Tilburg University (Netherland) and Marcantonio Ruisi, Università degli Studi di Palermo. The Report also features the contributions of Italian and International experts from different universities, institutions and associations, working in the field of gastronomy tourism.

Data is presented both qualitatively and quantitatively with graphs and charts to analyse effectively the emerging trends impacting food and beverage tourism. The Report is the most comprehensive market research of the food and beverage tourism industry in Italy. It includes data on food and beverage travellers and their characteristics and behaviours.

The Report can help DMOs, institutions, consortia, entrepreneurs and companies to make the best decisions for their strategy, product development and marketing needs.

The Report is a useful tool to:

  • Develop better products, in line with the demand
  • To activate marketing operations more efficiently
  • To get an updated picture not only Italian, but also international
  • To know the latest trends of the sector
